Roundtable Session on Power Markets

India needs to add 450-600 GW of power generation capacity over the next 20 years to meet the demands of the economy growing at 8-10 percent – this translates into a staggering 20-30 GW per year, a 4-6 times increase over our historical rate, requiring USD 1-1.5 trillion investments (at today’s real value).
Meeting these goals would require mobilising significant public and private sector participation across the value chain, through creating the platform for attractive returns and manageable risks. For example, the business model of generating electricity through captive coal at extremely low cost, and selling in the merchant markets at 5-7 times the cost is unlikely to sustain or be replicable – merchant prices are already tending towards marginal costs and cheap captive coal is no longer available. At the same time, companies have to deal with multiple risks from execution to input pricing.
