Road Infrastructure Development in India/Punjab State

Roads are the lifeline of a country and are basic infrastructure for economic, industrial, commercial, social and cultural development of a State. The Punjab Government has taken major initiatives to improve road infrastructure in the State. The brief detail is as under:-

National Highways

Out of 1739 Km of National Highways passing through the state of Punjab, 405 Kms National Highways have been upgraded to 4-lane under National Highway Development Programme (NHDP) on PPP mode. The work of upgradation of 413 Kms National Highways to 4/6-lanes is in progress and is likely to be completed during next two years.

The Govt. of India has further included Zirakpur - Patiala - Bathinda Road (NH-64), Amritsar to Shri Ganga Nagar Road (NH-15) and Jalandhar - Jind Road (NH-71) in the list of NHDP-IV. The Zirakpur-Patiala-Bathinda project is at an advance stage of implementation and the work is likely to be awarded during the current financial year. The feasibility study NH-15 and NH-71 has been completed and the RFP documents are under preparation. The work on these two National Highways is also likely to be awarded during the next financial year. With the upgradation of these National Highways, about 90% length of National Highways passing through the State of Punjab will be upgraded to 4/6-lanes during the next five years.
